How to edit a PDF

  1. Drop a PDF onto the page, or choose one from your machine.
  2. Click any line of text to put a cursor in it and type. Add an image, a highlight, a signature or a note from the toolbar.
  3. Download the edited PDF. The original and your edits are sent to our server so the file can be rebuilt in its own fonts, and the copy there is deleted at once.

Editing happens inside your browser tab. When you download, the original file and your list of edits are sent to our server over an encrypted connection so the PDF can be rebuilt with the file's own fonts; the copy there is deleted as soon as the result is sent back. If the server cannot be reached, the file is written in your browser instead.

About this tool

Can I edit the text that is already in the PDF?
Yes. Click a line to put a cursor in it and retype it. Folio matches the font, size and spacing already on the page, so the correction sits inside the paragraph rather than on top of it.
Will the fonts change?
Not where the document carries its fonts with it. Where a font is one of the fourteen a PDF is allowed to assume is installed, Folio stands in a face with the same metrics, so line breaks and spacing hold.
Can I edit a scanned PDF?
You can mark it up, draw on it, sign it and reorder its pages, but you cannot retype it. A scan is a photograph of a page: there are no letters in it to edit, only pixels. OCR PDF can give it a text layer, so it becomes searchable and selectable, even though it still cannot be retyped here.
Is my file uploaded?
Editing happens in this browser tab. When you download, the original file and the list of edits are sent to our server over an encrypted connection, so the PDF can be patched with its own fonts rather than redrawn; the copy there is deleted as soon as the result is sent back. If the server cannot be reached, the file is written in your browser instead.
Is there a size limit?
Yes, on this tool. Folio opens a PDF up to 40 MB, and reads the first 100 pages of a longer one — it says how many it left behind. Rebuilding a file as something you can click into and retype costs far more memory than the page tools, which only restack pages and have no fixed cap.
Do I need an account?
No. Open a PDF, edit it and download the result without signing up. An account only changes where a copy you choose to keep is stored.
