Add page numbers

Put page numbers into the margin of a PDF and watch them land on the real page as you set them, rather than finding out after you download. Choose the corner, the size and the wording — 1, Page 1 of 20, or your own. A document with a cover and front matter can be numbered in one pass: leave the cover blank, set the preface in i, ii, iii, and start the body again at 1.

What it does

Add page numbers, at a glance.

  • See the number on the real page before you commit
  • Number front matter and the body differently, in one pass
  • Skip the cover, or reuse the numbering already in the file

This tool runs entirely inside your browser tab. The file never leaves your machine, using it needs no sign-up, downloading needs only a free account, and nothing you download carries a watermark.

Step by step

How to add page numbers

  1. Drop a PDF onto the page, or choose one from your machine.
  2. Pick the corner and the wording. The preview shows the actual page, so you can see whether the number clashes with anything already on it.
  3. Download the numbered PDF. The file you started with is left alone.

Questions

Add page numbers: questions and answers

Yes. Each run of numbering has its own starting number, so a chapter that carries on from another can begin at 47.
