- Is Folio really free?
- Yes. Every tool is free to use, with no watermark on anything you download. None of the PDF tools needs a sign-up; sending a PDF for signature needs a free account.
- Are my files uploaded to a server?
- Fourteen of the eighteen tools run entirely inside your browser tab, so the file never leaves your machine. PDF to Word and OCR PDF send it over an encrypted connection, because converting to .docx and reading text off a scan both need a server, and so does the editor when you download, so the PDF can be rebuilt with its own fonts; that copy is deleted as soon as the result is sent back, unless you are signed in and asked to keep it. eSign uploads the file to your account, because the request needs it until everyone has signed.
- Do I need an account?
- Not for the PDF tools. You can open a PDF and download the result without signing up. An account changes where a copy you keep is stored — in this browser, or in your account so it is there from another machine — and sending a PDF for signature needs one, because the request is tracked there.
- Can I edit the actual text in a PDF?
- Yes. Click a line of text to put a cursor in it and type. Folio matches the font, size and spacing already on the page, so the correction sits inside the paragraph rather than on top of it.
- What about scanned PDFs?
- A scanned page has no text layer — it is a photograph of a page. Folio opens it as exactly that picture, so you can still mark it up, draw on it, sign it, and reorder or delete pages. What you cannot do is click a sentence and retype it, because there are no letters there to edit, only pixels.
- Is there a file size limit?
- The editor opens a PDF up to {importCapLabel}, and reads the first {maxImportPages} pages of a longer one — it tells you how many it left behind rather than quietly dropping them. The other browser tools have no fixed cap: the limit is what your machine can comfortably hold in memory, so a very large scan is slower on a phone than on a laptop. PDF to Word runs on a server and has its own caps — {uploadCap} and {maxPages} pages.
- What happens to my file when I close the tab?
- It is gone. The document lives in the tab while you work on it, and nothing is written to disk unless you download it or tick “keep a copy” on the way out.
- Does it work offline?
- Yes. Once you have opened Folio or installed it as an app, the client-side tools work completely offline. Merging, splitting, extracting, deleting pages, reordering, rotating, cropping, compressing, protecting, and unlocking all run on your device without an internet connection. Only server tools (like PDF to Word or OCR) require a connection.
- Does it work on a phone or tablet?
- Yes. Folio runs in any current browser on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. The editor is most comfortable on a screen with room for the page and its panels side by side, but the page tools are happy on a phone.
- Can it remove a password I have lost?
- No. Unlock removes the password and the restrictions from a file you can already open — either because you know the password, or because only the advisory permission bits were set. It is not a way into a document you are locked out of.
- Do I need to install anything?
- No, though you can if you like. Folio runs in the browser you already have open with no extension or plugins needed, and you can also install it as a standalone app to launch it directly from your dock or home screen.
